Brooks summary

Brooks was incorporated as a village on July 14, 1910, and as a town on September 8, 1911. It became a city on September 1, 2005 and is located 168 kilometres (104 mi) east of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway and 10 kilometres (6 mi) east of Highway 36. Brooks' population is 13,581. Brooks is serviced by the Brooks Airport.
Brooks is home to the Lakeside Leisure Centre, which includes two skating rinks (Centennial and Sparrow), a curling rink, an aquatic centre with a waterslide and wave pool, a gymnasium, a fitness centre, and multipurpose rooms. There are three provincial parks in the area: Kinbrook Island Provincial Park to the south; Dinosaur Provincial Park, a world heritage site, to the northeast; and Tillebrook Provincial Park to the east. The Brooks Aqueduct in the southeast was built to transport irrigation water across the Eastern Irrigaton District.

During the winter months, the Brooks Bandits play in the Alberta Junior Hockey League They joined the league in 2000 and have become more and more popular over the years. During the spring of 2005, The AJHL's Brooks Bandits advanced to the playoffs for the first time, but lost to the Camrose Kodiaks.

In 2007, the Alberta and Canada governments announced they will each contribute three million dollars for a multi-purpose arena to replace the 45 year old Centennial Arena. The new arena will be located on the south side of the city, near the corner of Silver Sage and Young Roads S.W. The new 1,692 seat arena will be completed by July 2009.The facility will also include corporate boxes, individual seating, concession services, and a running track/mezzanine. In October 2007, the city announced that Bearden Engineering and Conrad Industries have been hired for the infrastructure of the facility.
